Head of Teen Services -Valley Cottage Library; Rockland County, New York
The Valley Cottage Library is seeking a creative, self-starter for the full-time position of Head of Teen Services. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to public service and a passion for the young adult population (6-12 grades) and young adult literature.
Performing under the supervision of the Head of Adult Services, the Head of Teen Services is responsible for all general librarian functions as well as planning and directing all activities and collection development for the teen population. They will organize and manage a year-long schedule of teen-driven programming including Summer Reading activities, book discussions and community service programs and is responsible for creating in-house displays, booklists and online guides (LibGuides). Seasonal visits to Nyack School District schools (5th grade, middle and high schools) to promote Summer Reading Program and library resources is expected as is building upon relationships with school personnel to continue established collaboration.
Additionally, this position supervises and manages the library’s student pages which includes hiring, training, scheduling and performance reviews.
Excellent interpersonal skills and communication abilities and proficiency with budget management are required. It is expected that the person in this position will stay current with new technologies and popular trends especially as related to young adults.
The successful candidate will have a vision for the future and the ability to effectively establish positive and successful working relationships with all staff, library patrons of all ages and the community. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative.
- MLS from an ALA-accredited program
- NYS public librarian certificate required
- Two years experience as a public services librarian including supervisory responsibilities
- SIRSI Symphony/Workflows experience a plus
This position requires a 35-hour work week with evening and Saturday assignments. The 7-hour work day includes a paid 30-minute lunch period. The library offers a generous vacation/sick plan, a matching 403B plan and paid health insurance benefits.
