Mount Saint Mary College seeks an innovative, dynamic, and self-motivated individual to join a collaborative and collegial team of library faculty and support staff committed to the continuous improvement of library resources and services. Position reports to the Director of the Library.
Assistant Librarian for Assessment and Instruction
Works with the director and other library faculty to develop assessment measures for all aspects of library service, with an emphasis on student learning outcomes. Assesses the effectiveness of information literacy (IL) instruction at all levels and via all modalities. Coordinates student evaluations of library faculty by developing evaluation methods and instruments and analyzing results. Develops the library’s assessment plan, for both academic and administrative functions.
Stays current with trends in library assessment and IL instruction and puts them into practice. Gathers and analyzes First Year Experience assessment data pertaining to information literacy. Prepares an annual report of all assessment findings for the library.
Develops and oversees the library’s information literacy instruction program, both face-to-face and online, from general education through upper division courses in the major, including writing-intensive and capstone courses. Establishes goals and sets priorities for the instruction program. Identifies courses/programs with IL outcomes and reaches out to course instructors to ensure that IL instruction is incorporated. Promotes and markets instruction services.
Supervises the Instruction Services Librarian, assigning areas of focus and responsibility within the overall instruction program. Takes the lead on development of IL tutorials and other learning activities that can be utilized by library faculty. Ensures an equitable teaching load among library faculty and that learning outcomes are assessed in accordance with the library’s assessment plan.
Leads library participation in the First Year Experience program and serves as instruction team member in designated FYE learning communities. Coordinates information desk and research consultation services as integrated elements of IL instruction. Provides general reference service. As liaison to designated academic programs, teaches information literacy sessions, selects library materials, and conducts research consultations within these disciplines.
Oversees the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC). Develops the CMC collection and trains library faculty, reference librarians, and staff in the use of CMC resources. Supervises student workers assigned to the CMC.
Represents the library on the General Education Committee and the Program Review Committee. Serves as liaison to HEOP and the Center for Student Success. Leads library involvement in the Summer Bridge Program. Coordinates library role in Freshman Orientation.
- Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited program.
- Experience working in a college or university library.
- Demonstrated proficiency assessing student learning outcomes and other library functions.
- Demonstrated proficiency teaching information literacy skills at the college level. Familiarity with the ACRL information literacy framework.
- Experience in online instruction.
- Experience in providing academic reference service in person and virtually.
- Understanding of effective promotion of library services to students and faculty.
- Experience in creating or maintaining web site content.
- Familiarity with emerging technologies and trends in higher education.
- Strong technology skills and the ability to adapt to changing technological environments.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with library faculty and support staff, as well as the greater campus community, and to show initiative in fulfilling responsibilities.
- Effective organizational and project management skills.
- Flexibility in covering reference desk and instruction schedules.
- Familiarity with library materials to support grades PK-12.
- Supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of collection development tools, techniques, and strategies.
- Knowledge of library resources in the fields of education and science.
- Experience with first-year experience programs.
This is a 12-month, tenure-track position. To earn promotion and tenure, library faculty must meet performance expectations for teaching effectiveness, research and scholarship, and service to college and community.
