Library Assistant (Programmer) -- Reed Memorial Library

The Reed Memorial Library in Carmel, New York is ready to hire a Library Assistant
(Programmer) for a broad range of duties related to all aspects of the library’s programs. This
includes but is not limited to planning, marketing, conducting, and facilitating library programs
for adults and youth.

The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the Youth Services librarian and other
senior library staff and will be responsible for all aspects of programs to encourage lifelong
library use for adults and youth (grades K-12) as well as facilitating the promotion of all library
services and activities throughout the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Develops, prepares, promotes, and implements programs and special events for adults and youth (grades K-12).
  • Identifies opportunities for new and enhanced programs, collaborating with library staff and community partners to develop, plan, and implement programs that meet the needs of the community in accordance with the library’s mission.
  • Manages programming budget, contracts, invoices, and receipts.
  • Compiles statistics and provides program summary and evaluation reports as requested.
  • Maintains the library’s events calendar and the library’s social media presence for programs.
  • Advertises and promotes library programs using a variety of different formats and outlets.
  • Assists with circulation and other library functions as needed.
  • Other special projects and duties in support of the library’s mission as assigned by the Library Director or Youth Services Librarian.

  • Knowledge of the developmental, recreational, cultural and educational needs of adults and youth in the community.
  • Strong organizational and writing skills including style and editing standards.
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design programs such as Canva.
  • High level of comfort with computers and technology and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to perform with minimal supervision, establish and maintain priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise initiative.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Library Science, English or Communications or a closely related
field and at least one year of experience performing duties related to the oversight, coordination
and administration of programs for adults and youth.


This position may require working during any of the hours that the Library is open, including
evenings and weekends. Although a regular schedule is established, programming requirements
and the needs of the library may require schedule changes and flexibility.

$20/hour and Paid Time Off

This is a provisional Civil Service appointment. For permanent appointment, the selected
candidate must be reachable on an appropriate Civil Service List of Eligibles once the
examination is given and the List established and will serve a probationary period of up to 12
