Collections Care Assistant — Historic Huguenot Street

Historic Huguenot Street (HHS), a 10-acre National Historic Landmark District in New Paltz, New York, is seeking a full-time Collections Care Assistant (CCA).

This is an entry level position with opportunities to learn about collections care and management over time. The position is ideal for an individual with interests in preservation and/or conservation. The CCA’s primary responsibility is day-to-day historic housekeeping and care in the HHS historic buildings and storage spaces. While adhering to accepted museum standards and preservation guidelines, this entails the inspection and cleaning of architectural elements (floors, ceilings, moldings, etc.) and museum objects. The CCA also assesses and reports environmental or other changes in interior spaces and monitors the condition of museum collections. The Collections Care Assistant is trained and supervised by the Collections Manager and works closely with the other Curatorial and Preservation staff, interns, and the Building and Grounds Department.

• Plans, performs, and records daily/weekly/monthly/seasonal historic housekeeping
• Maintains a regular schedule for inspection of objects on display and cleans as needed using the appropriate, approved supplies and methods, notifying the Collections Manager when further attention is needed
• Adheres to museum guidelines for the care and maintenance of varied objects and materials, including wood furniture, ceramics, metal work, and textiles
• Participates in pest management measures with Collections Manager/Buildings and Grounds staff
• Works with Collections Manager on object related tasks, such as inventory, documentation, condition reporting, preventive care, etc.
• Additional collection related tasks as assigned

• Prior work/intern experience at a museum, historic site, or art gallery is desirable
• Bachelor degree in a related field is desirable
• Self-motivated, detail oriented, and exceptional organizational skills
• Ability to perform necessary physical tasks, such as lifting up to 40 lbs., carrying and using a vacuum, climbing stairs and step ladders, etc.

Hours, Salary, and Benefits
This is a full-time, non-exempt (hourly) position at $16-$17 per hour. Requires onsite work. Hours are 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. HHS offers a generous package of paid holidays, vacation, personal, and sick time, and contributes to a group health insurance. Other benefits are available.
